Maxwell Food Center is located near Chinatown. It is a 10 to 15mins walk from Chinatown MRT (NE4/DT19). Alternatively, you may wish to alight at Tanjong Pagar Station (EW15) and you shall reach Maxwell in approximately 20 to 25mins.
When tourist come to Maxwell, the first food that come to the mind is Hainanese Chicken Rice. But we are not recommending that today as there are other hidden gems in the food centre.
1. China Street Fritters
First on the list, is a traditional fritters stall which is a must eat to me whenever I visit. Unlike other similar stall, this stall maintains the traditional cuisine of pork liver roll and egg slice(旦(dàn)片(piàn)) which are my favorite. The pinkish sausage alike is called 'Guan Chang', the exterior is pork intestine and stuff with pork meat (adding some pink food colouring). Lesser stall are selling the 'Guan Chang' because this dish is difficult to prepare and require skill and a lot of time.
2. FuZhou Oyster Cake
This oyster cake stall is another stall that I must eat when I visit Maxwell Food Center. This might be a simple dish but the amount of effort put in to make a perfect oyster cake is tough. A thin layer of homemade batter is topped with fresh prawns, oyster, minced meat and some celery before it is being deep fried.
3. Kam Wah Fish Soup
Kam Wah fish soup, never fails to draw the crowd with it snaking Q during lunch time. The taste of the fish soup is good but personally I would still prefer the fish soup at Bugis.
4. Hock Kee Food Stuff
This tidbit stall is selling a variety of traditional biscuits and also fish cracker (fishball keropok) from Indonesia. The lady boss is very friendly and helpful. You may want to purchase some traditional snacks of Singapore from her. Do drop by and have a look, you might happen to find some snacks that interest you.
